LG's curved-screen G-Flex smartphone
South Korean mobile phone maker LG claims that the vertically curved design of its G-Flex smartphone is optimised "for the average face", delivering better voice and sound quality. It may also offer a better grip, and better viewing experience when used for watching video in landscape mode.It fits more comfortably in the user's back pocket, according to LG. In landscape mode, the display offers an IMAX-like experience, providing a comfortable viewing angle for watching videos or playing games.
Weighing at 177g with 6-inch(but 720p) curved OLED display, it's powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM, It features a 13-Megapixel camera housed above the two rear control buttons and 2.1-Megapixel front camera for video calls, which is now LG's thing. the screen on the G-Flex arcs from top to bottom, not side-to-side, which at least makes a little more sense to us, hopefully fitting in better to the curvature of the user's face.
LG claims the device's shape is "optimised for the average face", touting better voice quality due to the microphone's closer proximity to the user's mouth when making calls. In addition to the curved screen LG has also fitted the device with a curved 3,500mAh - enough power for more than a full day of use.
Like LG G2, the G Flex has buttons on the rear rather than the sides, meaning there is less chance of accidentally switching off the phone. The user can also adjust the volume with their index finger while talking, without any interruption to the conversation.
Like LG's most recent flagship smartphone, the G Flex lacks physical buttons on the front or side of the device, relegating the home and volume buttons to just below the rear-facing camera.
Its vertically curved display offers more immersive video watching experience and the phone uses a curved battery to support its form factor, LG said.
Changing form factors of the battery as well as phone's chip board and other components remain a challenge in achieving flexible devices.
The Flex has another trick up its sleeve: The back is cover with a special "elastic coating" that, according to LG, allows the phone cases to "self-heal" minor scratches and nicks.
Starting next month, the LG G Flex goes on sale in Korea. There's no price or release date for the rest of the world.
